An on-target U.S. inflation print should be enough to lift the pound against a dollar that has priced in a lot of Fed hawkishness.
Wednesday's U.S. inflation report carries the heft to knock the dollar back and offer the Pound to Dollar exchange rate a route higher, even if the data lands on or slightly above consensus.
Pound Sterling Live's view is that an on-target reading will be enough to bolster the pound, because a great deal of Federal Reserve hawkishness is already in the dollar's price.
The Dollar Index sits at a 2026 high with its momentum indicators stretched, which leaves it vulnerable to any print that fails to add to the case for further hikes.
The consensus looks for headline inflation to pick up to 3.6%, with the monthly rate of core inflation expected to slow to 0.2%.
Markets price around 75 basis points of further Fed tightening, so a core print at 0.2% confirms what is already priced and gives the dollar nothing new.
Positioning adds to the dollar's vulnerability.
Dollar CFTC long positions rose to $35bn ahead of the data, the highest since 21 August, according to Societe Generale.
"Short covering could briefly turn sentiment around if US CPI underwhelms," says Kenneth Broux, Head of Corporate Research FX and Rates at Societe Generale.
Credit Agricole's positioning model signals the pound is oversold against the dollar, and the bank has entered a long GBP/USD position with a take-profit of 4%.
"The GBP became the biggest short in the G10 FX space following some selling interest last week, predominantly driven by IMM flows," says Credit Agricole in its weekly positioning update.
A crowded dollar long against a crowded sterling short is the setup for a sharp move higher if the catalyst disappoints the dollar bulls.
Gains Capped by a Loaded UK Calendar
Any pound strength looks set to be shallow and limited as USD dominance looks increasingly to be an embedded theme.
But, turning to pound sterling specifically, there's also enough idiosyncratic uncertainty in the near-term calendar to keep GBP/USD upside limited.
The Pound to Dollar rate trades at 1.3242, just under its 21-day moving average at 1.3278, with the RSI at 41.7 showing momentum has steadied without turning positive.

"Sterling's forward path looks increasingly captive to an event-heavy calendar, with entrenched positioning leaving GBP/USD confined to a modest 1.3180โ1.3280 range in recent sessions," says LSEG in a market note.
"Brief reactions to geopolitical news in the Middle East have been fleeting, demonstrating a lack of conviction to break out of this established channel," LSEG adds.
The next two UK events are UK inflation on 21 October and the Budget on 28 October.
Societe Generale expects speculative accounts to expand their sterling shorts ahead of the Budget before covering after the event, which argues against sterling holding any CPI-driven gains for long.
"Should negative sentiment gain traction, and the Autumn Budget disappoint, it could accelerate a decline toward 2026 lows at 1.3140 and possibly November 2025 lows near 1.30," says LSEG.
Our house view is that the pound stays capped into the Budget and recovers afterwards.
That leaves a benign U.S. inflation print as the one near-term catalyst that can lift the Pound to Dollar rate before the Budget, with the 1.3274 to 1.3302 resistance band the limit of what it can deliver.
