What's Driving GBP/CAD
- 🇨🇦 GBP/CAD has broken above three-week range, suggesting shift in momentum
- Move is CAD weakness rather than GBP strength, following collapse of US-Canada trade talks and 50% tariffs that took effect on Saturday
- Resistance at 1.88100 has gone, after four rejections in three weeks
- Immediate obstacle is descending trendline from July's peak, which pair is testing now
- Daily close above trendline opens 1.9000, then July high near 1.9040
- 1.88100 becomes first support, then shelf at 1.87114. Close beneath 1.87114 invalidates setup and exposes 1.8600, then 1.83500
- Medium-term, advance from March's 1.80 base is intact
- US imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20bn of Canadian goods, and Carney has said Canada will match them dollar for dollar from 8 September, targeting steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. Greer says no further talks are planned
- Scotiabank: collapse torpedoed positive CAD sentiment built over previous four weeks and heralds period of more intense uncertainty
- Morgan Stanley: no-deal points USD/CAD towards 1.41
- Offsets remain: levies cover about 5% of Canadian exports, oil is firm, and USD/CAD has moved only to around 1.38 from 1.376, so CAD reaction is measured. Forward risk is Trump's stated plan to raise tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks, parts and steel to 50% on 1 January 2027
