What's Driving GBP/USD Today

  • ◦ GBP/USD in 1.0% drop on Thursday after Burnham triggers a by-election in Makerfield

  • ◦ This allows him to run for Parliament and challenge Keir Starmer for leader of the Labour Party
  • ◦ Markets adjust to the news by selling GBP and UK bonds
  • ◦ Investors are worried that Burnham will pursue inflationary policies and issue too much debt
  • ◦ But our take is GBP will find some support 
  • ◦ Why? Because Burnham has to win Makerfield which is now a Reform stronghold
  • ◦ Nowcast modelling shows Reform is likely to win 45% | Polymarket only has Burnham at 35% on becoming next PM
  • ◦ But, important to remember that GBP/USD is also largely influenced by USD. 
  • ◦ USD is looking better supported more broadly as market pivots to expecting a Fed rate hike
  • ◦ That should add further pressure on GBP/USD
